Be wary of a Norton renewal scam

By BY GEORGE GORDON/Computer Guru - | Feb 18, 2022

One of my clients called me up today saying that on the telephone was a Norton rep from India who was helping his wife remove a $450 Norton renewal fee that she saw when opening up an e-mail.

She put Norton Antivirus on her computer about ten years ago and never renewed it. So she decided to call up the number listed in the e-mail and started talking to Joe Smith from Bombay, India. He took control of her computer and put a tracking program on it. Then he persuaded her to cough up her bank account number and password, telling her that he could void the $450.

Then, all of a sudden, he told her that he made a mistake and put $4,500 in her bank account. He asked her to sign into her bank account and return that money to him. In the course of doing this, her husband had been on the phone with me explaining the circumstances of what was going on.

I immediately told her to hang up, call her bank and put a hold on the bank account. “Joe Smith” kept calling back several times. The bank told her to come in the next day and to create a new account with new passwords.

So, please be aware that there is a Norton scam out there. Immediately delete the e-mail and never call the number attached to it.

Apple’s Find My App is a really useful feature for the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Mac, and it can help you easily locate your device if you lost it. To set this up, go to Settings, select Your Name and then Find My. To share your location with your friends and family, you will need to select Share My Location. Select Find My iPhone or Find My iPad and turn the setting to On.

If you want to find your devices when they are offline, then select Find My Network. This uses other people’s devices to locate your device and it is encrypted and anonymous. Once you set up Find My on your device, you can then use the app to locate your device.

Open the Find My App and you will then see a list of devices that you can locate using the app. Select the device you want to find from the menu, and then the app will show you your device’s location. If it is turned off, it should show you the last location that was recorded for the device.

I use this app with my new Air Tags that I clipped on to two of my dogs. They love to dig under the fence and go on road trips for several hours. When I find them missing, alI I have to do is open up my iPhone, use the Find My app to locate them, then fix the fence!
