Cool new features for iPads
In this issue, we’re going to take a look at your iPad. I hope you updated it to iOS 15, because there are some cool features you’ll like.
In earlier versions, you could split the screen and have two apps opened at the same time. But you first had to call up Albert Einstein and have him walk you through it. But since he passed away, Apple made it much easier to split the screen.
Let’s say you opened up Safari and want to take some notes off a special website you’re visiting. Wouldn’t it be nice to have Safari on the left side of the screen and Notes on the right side of the screen? Well, if you tap on the three dots at the top middle of the screen, three squares pop up. One is the full screen box, the next is the split screen box and the further right one is the slide over box. So, let’s give it a shot.
After Safari is opened up, click on the three dots and choose the split screen one. Safari slides off to the left, and you’re back at the main screen where you can choose Notes. Whammy — you have Safari on the left and Notes on the right side of the screen. Let’s say you want Safari to look bigger on the left side. Well, that’s simple. Just place your finger in the middle line that divides the screen of the two apps — there is a small white line in the middle of the big black line. Just place your finger on the small white line and drag it to the left or right. That’s it. You can control the size of each window.
If you drag Notes all the way to the right, it closes Notes. You can also play around with the slide over box and make the screens smaller or larger. In that mode, you can close either Safari or Notes by sliding the screen up, and it disappears.
Well, that’s nice and all if you have an iPad. What about your MacBook Pro? Yep, there is a way to split the screen on a Mac, too. Open up Safari, then open up Notes. Both apps appear on the screen. Let’s choose Safari, and on the top left is the green button. Click on it and choose “Tile window to the left of the screen.” Now click on the very top of the Notes screen — it automatically shifts to the right, and both are now equally side by side.
But if you look in the middle of the screen, there’s that big, thick black line going from the top to the bottom and a small white line in the middle of the black line. Just click on the small white line and move it either left or right, and it slides the screen over.
Here is the best part of owning an iPhone or iPad. You can take it traveling with you and have a conversation with anyone in the world.
Let’s try it out with Jose from San Acup of Coco. Open up Notes and type in: “Where is the best place to buy a taco?” Take your finger and swipe it around the text, then choose Translate. A screen pops up, and you can click on change language, so choose Spanish. The next window has a yellow button with the translated conversion.
If you click on the yellow circle, both you and Jose will hear the audio. But wait — there is a better way to converse instead of typing. Open up Notes and create a new note by choosing the square box with a pencil in it. Now click on the microphone icon on the bottom right and ask Jose when the next bullfight starts. Click on the middle of the screen and choose Translate, then hit the yellow button for audio.
Both you and him can talk story using the iPad, and you can also use your iPhone for the same thing.
