LAHAINA — Aloha, parents. The past couple of weeks have been exciting for Lahaina Intermediate School.
We participated in the annual Maui District Science Fair and the first Maui District Science Olympiad Competition. We received an Honorable Mention award in the Science Fair and placed third in the Science Olympiad Competition. This team will be moving on to the state level competition. Thank you to Anthony Griffith and Flaviana Ancheta, science teachers at LIS.
During the month of February, we are continuing to assess our English Language Learner (ELL) students on the WIDA, the annual measurement of student growth in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The results of this assessment will determine whether or not the ELL students are able to exit the ELL Program. There were a total of 184 students assessed this year.
This year, “Opportunity Rocks” will take place on Feb. 22. Six hotels have volunteered to host our eighth-graders to a tour of the different departments in their organization. These tours will expose our students to the different job opportunities. The students will be expected to write an essay to share their experiences, thoughts, and perhaps, career goals, as a result of their visit to the hotel industry. Eighth grade parents, if you are interested in volunteering to be a chaperone on this field trip, please call Lori Koyama at 662-3965, extension 231.
Parents, please remember this is the third quarter. Before you know it, the end of school will be in sight. Please check your child’s edline account to see if there are any missing assignments he/she needs to attend to. Let’s not have any negative surprises. If the information isn’t up to date, please call your child’s teacher(s) or make an inquiry in your child’s planner. Let’s be on top of things now. Again, if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to call us at 662-3965. IMUA!
