Up Front Lahaina
… GO LUNAS — winning four titles over the weekend (two for the boys and two for the girls). Congratulations you guys and gals, and to the coaches, WAY TO GO!!!…
… and the international sports news was the mea culpa of TIGER WOODS. Granted, his tightlipped apology probably took some doing for the aloof player, but he did it and made no bones about the fact that he was going back into therapy. And my bet is he’ll be back playing on the PGA Tour before the end of the year. And golf, in my opinion, will be better for his return…
… and last Friday, I saw the opening of the new PLANTATION MUSEUM at the WHARF CINEMA CENTER on the same level as the movie theater. And congratulations to all who had a hand in it: THEO MORRISON and DONNA SOARES for coming up with the idea, and MIKE JONES, ANDY KUTSUNAI and BOBBY KAWAGUCHI for implementing it, plus all the volunteers. The little museum is a must-see!…
… and while the congratulations are flowing, stand up and take a bow PACIFIC WHALE FOUNDATION for a great event, WHALE DAY, at Kalama Park. It was a day of music, food and fun for the whole family…
… and over the pond, are we evah lucky we live Hawaii with the snow and freezing cold on the Mainland! The first few days were fun with toboggans, snowmen and snowball fights. But then it got old very quickly once shoveling and snowplows were needed to free up roads, sidewalks and driveways. Traffic was snarled, and public transportation suffered late arrivals and cancellations. Yep — lucky we live Hawaii…
… and the approaching storm with Iran is becoming more of a worry for the rest of the world. The sanctions in place only see to antagonize them, and Hilary Clinton is right — the country has all the signs of a dictatorship with the students and younger generation fighting it, and the Revolutionary Guard clubbing them down…
… but back to the home front — what do you think of our great wall along the highway? I’m hearing the pros and the cons. The cons are vociferous and say it’s ugly — it takes away the view. (What view?) But the pros are protected from the traffic noise, the dust and the air pollution. I don’t have an opinion. I don’t live behind it — but no doubt we will soon hear from people who do!!!…
… and the Chinese New Year lion came to Lahaina last Friday — a welcome sight for the Year of the Tiger. Folks were lined up to feed the lion for good luck — me included. The Wharf Cinema Center, LahainaTown Action Committee and Lahaina Restoration Foundation all funded the lion for the town on different days. KUNG HEE FAT CHOY!!…
… I have a beef: why can’t the public bus service stop at LAUNIUPOKO BEACH PARK? There is ample room on both sides of the road — both at the park and the parking lot on the mauka side. Kids living in the Launiupoko area have to be driven to the Wharf to catch the bus to the other side. And so any families could use the bus to get to the popular beach park. I’m told that residents have petitioned the bus service but have been told no. Why??…
… and a belated but nonetheless sincere congratulations to our own BANK OF HAWAII for being voted by Forbes among America’s Best Banks — quite an accolade and well deserved. You go, BOH…
