LAHAINA — Aloha, everyone! Welcome to the new school year, 2009-10.

We continue to be committed to your child’s success at Lahaina Intermediate School. Our staff continues to dedicate their energy and time to ensure that your children make academic gains, as well as develop appropriate social skills. We will continue to support our students’ emotional “roller coaster” ride during their adolescent years in the middle level. They will learn coping skills and how to behave appropriately when faced with unfamiliar social challenges.

Hawaii State Assessment (HSA) scores have been received. It reflects positively on the efforts we dedicated to math last year with the support of ETS in our restructuring process. Overall, although ALL students at LIS MET Reading and Math, we still did not meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) due to subgroups that did not meet required growth. These subgroups are identified as: Disadvantaged, English Language Learners, Special Education, and Hispanics. We will continue to meet and strategize our standards-based lessons to reach all subgroups, so LIS is able to meet AYP next year.

School staff who have moved on to other schools or other professional endeavors are Rachel Goode, Christine Oshita, Estrellita Paranada, Nathan Williams and Sandra Mulligan (end of first semester last year). We wish them a heartfelt farewell and best wishes in their new positions and endeavors.

Joining us this year are James (Jay) Petrakis, vice principal; Haley Van Noord, grade seven Life Science (since second semester last year); Kimberly Walters, grade eight Math; and Veronica Young, grades 7-8, Study Skills for At-Risk Students. Welcome aboard!
