Kaulana Mahina Apartments — holding 195 workforce units — opened recently in Wailuku.
The workforce units, including studios, one bedrooms and two bedrooms, are going toward households earning 50% to 140% of Area Median Income.
More than 3,000 residents applied for the lottery, according to project officials.
Once completed, Kaulana Mahina will also include 129 market rate units, for a total of 324 units on more than 14 acres. Developers are Legacy Partners and AFL-CIO Building Investment Trust.
During the opening celebration last week, Mayor Richard Bissen said the project will help bring much-needed relief during a daunting housing crisis.
“Kaulana Mahina Apartments will provide crucial, affordable workforce housing for essential workers, such as teachers, first responders, healthcare professionals and service industry employees who are critical in supporting our local economy and everyday community needs,” he said.
