By Staff | Nov 9, 2023

The event's Winter Wonderland theme transformed the Princess Nahi‘ena‘ena Elementary School cafeteria into a magical space complete with beautifully adorned Christmas trees, enchanting inflatables, and the joyous sound of holiday music. Children and staff alike enjoyed the festive atmosphere.

LAHAINA — In the spirit of hope and community resilience, the Lahaina Toy Surprise and Delight event brought warmth and smiles to the children and staff of Princess Nahi’ena’ena Elementary School and King Kamehameha III Elementary School, who have faced hardships in the wake of the tragic Lahaina wildfires.

Held on Nov. 8, exactly three months after the devastating wildfires, this heartwarming event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of The Salvation Army and Walmart. The event aimed to bring joy to the families impacted by the Lahaina wildfires and create a Winter Wonderland filled with surprises and delights.

The Lahaina Toy Surprise and Delight event, held for the students, staff and administration of both Princess Nahi’ena’ena and King Kamehameha III Elementary Schools, welcomed almost 800 students ages 3-12 and over 125 administrators.

One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was when large gift bags filled with toys were distributed to each child present at the event, which was kept under wraps for it to be a complete surprise to the children. The smiles and excitement on their faces were a testament to the love and care shared by the Lahaina community, Walmart and The Salvation Army.

King Kamehameha III Elementary School, damaged in the fire, temporarily relocated its students and staff to Princess Nahi’ena’ena Elementary School. The schools not only faced physical damage but also lost valuable equipment, school supplies and branded items to proudly represent their school pride.

In a show of solidarity, and to commemorate the time and space that they now share, The Salvation Army gave each staff member a Princess Nahi’ena’ena and King Kamehameha III co-branded gift, and Walmart added to the joy by providing each of them with a Walmart gift card.

Capt. Steven Howard, The Salvation Army Kahului Corps officer, Maui County, shared, “These gifts are a small gesture of deep appreciation for these educators who have faced extreme challenges and yet remain committed to serving our keiki and ensuring that their learning experiences remain undeterred.”

This extraordinary event brought together community, serving as a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion. It showcased the strength and resilience of Lahaina in the face of adversity while instilling hope and joy in the hearts of the young students and their families.
