Power restored to wastewater station

By Staff | Aug 23, 2023

Power has been restored to one of Maui County’s wastewater pumping stations in West Maui as Hawaiian Electric continues repairs in areas damaged by the recent wildfires, the company said Monday afternoon.

Installation of the second mobile substation in the Lahaina area has also been completed, and crews are now working to build new distribution lines from that mobile substation to complete restoration to customers in the Launiupoko to Olowalu area.

More than 80 percent of the customers who lost electricity in the fires have their power back on, according to the company. About 1,800 customers in Olowalu, Lahaina and some surrounding areas remain without power. About 50 customers are still without power Upcountry.

Supplies needed for additional repair work are expected to arrive on Maui this week, including 3,500 feet of specialized cables used in particular areas of Upcountry that are being sent from Hawaii island, Hawaiian Electric said.

More than 400 Hawaiian Electric employees and contractors from Molokai, Lanai, Oahu and Hawaii island are on Maui to help with the restoration work.
