MEO pauses fire housing program
Maui Economic Opportunity put its fire relief housing program on hold Monday after committing all funds received toward housing those displaced by the wildfires, the nonprofit announced.
The Maui Fires Relief Transition Housing program matched those displaced by the fires to available rental units for up to six months.
MEO received funding from the state Office of Community Services, private donations and foundations. It generated a list of available rental units, accepted applications from fire victims and matched them to places. Should more funds become available, MEO said it has many remaining applications pending.
Other assistance for those displaced by the fires is available at www.disasterassistance.gov/. Residents should type in their ZIP code and click on “Apply Online.”
Those who have offered housing units and have not heard from MEO should register their unit with the Hawai’i Housing Finance and Development Corp.’s Hawai’i Fire Relief Housing Program at dbedt.hawaii.gov/hhfdc/hawaii-fire-relief-housing-program/. HHFDC has generated a listing of available units for those who lost homes in the fires. The program is separate from MEO’s.
