Hear the latest on PARK MAUI during July 24 Virtual Open House sessions

By Staff | Jul 21, 2023

LAHAINA — Maui County staff will share the latest updates on the PARK MAUI pilot program in Lahaina during a Virtual Open House on Monday, July 24.

Two sessions will be offered: from 9 to 10 a.m. or 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Registration is available at www.parkmaui.com under “Upcoming Events.”

Updates on topics shared during the last Lahaina Open House — including bike parking, road congestion during boat days, alternative transportation options and improvements to the Prison Street Parking Lot — will be discussed during Monday’s meetings.

Starting in late summer of this year, the County of Maui will launch PARK MAUI, its new parking management program that strives to implement data-driven solutions for parking at beach parks, in business districts and on streets throughout the island’s most heavily utilized areas.

The program’s pilot parking locations are Lahaina Town, Ulua/Mokapu Beach Park and the Kamaole Beach Parks in South Maui, and Wailuku Town.

According to the website, “The PARK MAUI program in Lahaina Town aims to improve parking access and availability for residents, visitors, and employees. Paid on-street parking in town will encourage turnover and long-term parking in off-street lots, while providing employees with affordable and reliable parking options. This comprehensive approach will enhance the overall parking experience in Lahaina, ensuring a smoother and more convenient parking experience for all.”

The proposed Lahaina Town Parking Management Zone includes Front Street from Shaw to Papalaua streets; Canal, Wharf and Hotel streets surrounding Banyan Tree Park; the alley on the north side of Lahaina Public Library; Dickenson Street, Lahainaluna Road and Papalaua Street between Front and Wainee streets; and the Prison Street and Luakini Street parking lots.

Details and parking rates are pending Maui County Council approval.

For Hawaii residents, the proposed rates are $4 an hour for on-street parking (three-hour time limit per day), and three hours free in the Prison Street Parking Lot ($2.50 for each additional hour). Fees would apply daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

For part-time and non-residents, the proposed fees are $4 an hour for on-street parking (three-hour time limit per day), and $2.50 an hour for off-street parking (maximum $30 per day) or purchase a weekly/monthly parking pass. Fees would apply daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

For Lahaina employees, permit parking spaces would be available at the Prison Street and Luakini Street parking lots. Designated permit parking would be available for $30 per month, with a low-income rate option of $10 per month for those who qualify.

Parking fees don’t apply on County of Maui holidays, and per Maui County Code, overnight parking is prohibited in towns and beaches.

At this point, all proposed details are subject to change.

The PARK MAUI website explains: “As of the latest update, the PARK MAUI program is in the final stages of development and is awaiting review by the Maui County Council. Once the Maui County Council reviews the recommendations for the PARK MAUI project, they will decide whether to approve the program or make any necessary amendments. Upon approval by the Maui County Council, the PARK MAUI project will be implemented.

“The exact timeline for the Maui County Council’s review of the PARK MAUI program recommendations may vary. However, efforts are being made to ensure a thorough review process, taking into account the input of stakeholders and community members and recommendations by parking consultants. Updates regarding the timeline will be communicated as they become available.”
