Community invited for free event in Hawaiian tradition

Popular entertainer Wilmont Kahaialii will be back for music and talk story to help historical Holy Innocents Church on Friday, March 10.
LAHAINA — Holy Innocents Episcopal Church will have a lot to celebrate when it once again hosts the community at a Pau Hana with free music, pupus, refreshments and tours as part its fund raising Capital Campaign.
The event marking the mid-way point in raising nearly half of the $350,000 in donations needed will start on the Front Street lawn at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 10.
Campaign Chair Jacob Marsh announced that funds are now available to replace the roof of the church, and a contractor has been selected for the project.
A Cut Above Roofing, a Lahaina-based company owned by J. P. Mihlbauer, has been awarded the contract.
“We couldn’t be happier to make this announcement,” said Marsh. “We still need to go through permitting, and my hope is to have the roof replaced over summer break so Holy Innocents Preschool is not impacted.
“We may have other news soon, as we have a designated donation for the remodel of the parish hall kitchen and are well on our way to selecting a contractor for the project,” he said.
One of Maui’s most popular entertainers, Wilmont Kahaialii, will be on hand at the Pau Hana to entertain.
“We still have funds to raise, but are very grateful for all the progress so far thanks to our local parishioners, the Lahaina community and visitors who come year-after-year to be part of our parish family,” said Marsh.
Holy Innocents’ Vicar, the Reverend Bruce DeGooyer, added his thanks and encouraged the community to enjoy the March 10 event.
The Anglican religion was established in Maui more than 160 years ago by the monarchy with the help of England’s Queen Victoria.
The current church building and campus were dedicated in 1927. It is part of the Lahaina Historic Walking Tour, with guide materials available at the Lahaina Visitor Center in the Old Lahaina Courthouse by the Banyan Tree.

Holy Innocents is located at 561 Front St. in Lahaina. The free event is from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Friday March 10. Donations are welcome but not necessary.
