Lahainaluna High School Foundation Executive Director Art Fillazar was honored as a "Legend of Lahainaluna" in 2018.

LAHAINA — The Lahainaluna High School Foundation is pleased to announce the return of its “Legends of Lahainaluna” after a hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions and concerns.

The last awards dinner was held in 2019 in the school cafeteria, Hale Pa’ina. The honorees that year included Jean H. Miyahira, Brian A. Kelly, Dr. Charles Araki, and the Royal Lahaina Resort.

The 2022 version is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022 in Hale Pa’ina. Details will be announced later.

The “Legends of Lahainaluna” was first held in 2011 and presented to individuals and businesses who have made significant contributions to Lahainaluna High School and the community in which they reside.

Previous recipients of the prestigious award were:

2011 — Henry “Bruno” Ariyoshi, Robert Kawaguchi, and The Westin Maui Resort and Spa;

2012 — Sue D. Cooley, Andrew Kutsunai, Alice K.K. Banham, and the Makana Aloha Foundation;

2013 — Rev. Earl “Chief” Kukahiko, Hellas Construction Company, and Mary J. Bloder;

2016 — Michael Nakano, TS Restaurants, and Rev. Sheldon Dibble;

2017 — Lori Gomez-Karinen, Na Hoaloha Ekolu, and Samuel Mo’okini;

2018 — Dr, James S. Kumugai, Art Fillazar, Maui Fire Department, and Jimmie Grieg.

The public is invited to offer their nominations. Nominations must include the full name of the nominee (including maiden if applicable), graduation years from Lahainaluna (if applicable), mailing and e-mail contact for the nominee, and a brief statement as to why the candidate should be considered.

The nominator must also include his/her full name and contact information, such as mailing and e-mail addresses, as well as a phone contact with area code.
