Lahaina bookstore expands to new location

Driving from Makena, where she has a summer job, Michigan resident Amanda Bearden visited Lahaina to see the sites and find books at the newly relocated and expanded Maui Friends of the Library Bookstore at the Outlets of Maui.
LAHAINA — The Maui Friends of the Library Bookstore at the Outlets of Maui has moved to a much larger storefront and can now accommodate 1,000 more books than before and also take in more donations of used books.
The new storefront is across from Kate Spade and on the back side of Wailuku Brewing Company.
According to Store Manager Joann Carroll, the store features a large selection of fiction — particularly mysteries — and an excellent selection of art books.
DVDs also are an attraction, and currently there is an amazing collection of them.
In addition to gently used books, shoppers can find new Hawaiiana books.
“Hawaiiana selections are particularly valued by the visitors who come in to the store,” noted Carroll.
There also is a just-in series of books on President Abraham Lincoln in the Presidents Section of the store that might be of interest to history buffs on the island, she said.
“There are literally thousands of books available at reasonable prices,” she explained.
“Right now, we are particularly interested in recruiting happy and helpful volunteers,” said Carroll.
“Our volunteers are the heroes and heroines of our ability to support our libraries,” said Carroll. She noted that volunteers need to commit to no less than four hours a week. Those interested can apply at the store.
The Maui Friends of the Library is one of the county’s oldest non-profits, dating to 1912.
Today the organization operates two other bookstores here in addition to Lahaina — one at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Shopping Center in Kahului and a warehouse store in Puunene.
It is an all-volunteer organization, and all proceeds from book sales and financial donations go to support the eight public libraries in Maui County and a bookmobile that travels to schools and senior centers throughout the island.
Last year library support from Maui Friends exceeded $100,000.
The Outlets of Maui is located at 900 Front St. in Lahaina with ample parking available from Wainee and Papalaua streets. The Outlets also operates a shuttle that picks up and drops off shoppers at many of the hotels.
The bookstore is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
