Lottery scheduled for affordable rentals at Kaiaulu O Kupuohi

LAHAINA — A lottery will be held on May 27 for affordable rentals in the Kaiaulu O Kupuohi community in Lahaina.

The mid-rise, 89-unit project is located at 258 Kupuohi St. This affordable LEED for Homes project will consist of 20 one-bedroom units, 34 two-bedroom units and 35 three-bedroom units. Move-in is projected for September 2022.

Developed by Ikaika Ohana, Kaiaulu O Kupuohi is available to families with incomes at 60 percent or less of the average median income of the County of Maui.

Units will have Energy Star appliances, LED Energy Star lighting, hard surface flooring, solar water heating, air conditioning, water wise plumbing fixtures and ceiling fans throughout.

Amenities in this Maui County Residential Workforce Housing and Low-Income Housing Tax Credit project will include a community center with services and onsite management, tot lot, barbecue/picnic area, laundry facilities and ample parking.

Rents will be determined based on income limits set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The developer reported that final rent prices should be available shortly.

Anyone interested in applying for an affordable rental apartment at Kaiaulu O Kupuohi is invited to pick up, complete and submit an initial application at Lahaina Civic Center Social Hall (1840 Honoapiilani Highway) on May 19, and Keopulani Hall at Waiola Church, 535 Wainee St., on May 20 and 21. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. all three days.

All applications meeting the program requirements and delivered in person by the deadline of 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, will be reviewed for eligibility in the lottery that will be held on Friday, May 27, 2022, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Lahaina Civic Center.

A video link will be provided to all applicants to facilitate remote participation in the lottery. Residents of Molokai, Lanai and Hana should contact the property manager at (808) 206- 8103 for instructions.

Applicants do not need to attend the lottery. The first 88 applicants selected will be contacted within seven days to be reviewed for eligibility to move in. The 89th unit will be reserved for the resident manager.

Initial applications received after the deadline will be placed on a wait list.

A security deposit will be required, income limits vary by household size, and the household size must be appropriate for the available apartment. The household’s annual income must not exceed program income limits.
