NAPILI — Maui Preparatory Academy recently presented three full-tuition scholarships to West Maui students. The scholarship winners were asked to come to campus under the guise of a second formal interview, but they were instead greeted with news of their awards by the administration and scholarship committee.

Sacred Hearts School eighth-grader Noah Richard was awarded the Pueo Scholarship, a four-year award for a rising freshman new to Maui Prep.

Noah, the son of Brian and Yvette Richard of Lahaina, is an accomplished swimmer with Lahaina Swim Club, an avid surfer, skateboarder and musician.

His favorite subjects are English and writing.

Noah hopes that this opportunity will allow him to “pursue a job at whatever I think I’ll be happy doing!”

Noah loves the outdoors and frequently sails with his father, “Captain Turtle,” on the Trilogy catamarans.

Noah looks forward to bringing home trophies in swimming and credits his parents and Lahaina Swim Coach Tom Popdan for his success.

In addition, Lahaina residents Steve and Christine Herron established the Jonah Steven Herron Memorial Scholarship for an upper school student to complete their education at Maui Prep.

Ysa Bayani, a current Lahainaluna High School junior, and Logan Kalar, a current Maui Prep freshman, were both awarded full tuition for the duration of their high school years.

Ysa, the daughter of Michael Bayani, is excited for the opportunities and challenges that await her at Maui Prep.

Already a member of the Worship Band at Kumulani Chapel, Ysa plans to join Maui Prep’s 7AM band and continue participating in Science Olympiad.

Ysa is a trailblazer in her own right.

She moved with her father from Saipan prior to eighth grade. The only girl on the squads, Ysa played wide receiver for the Lahaina Intermediate School and Lahainaluna High School football teams for two years.

She looks forward to Maui Prep’s small community and to challenge herself in AP Chemistry.

“Above all, I value and prioritize my faith,” Ysa noted.

Logan Kalar (’25) performs with the school’s 7AM band and can be seen as Grandpa Joe in the upcoming production of “Willy Wonka Jr.”

Logan is the son of Gina Clements of Lahaina.

Founded in 2005, Maui Prep offers a broad knowledge base in math, science, world languages, English, history, and the culture and ecosystem of Maui.

The campus, formerly part of Maui Land and Pineapple Co. in Napili, features the Graham Center for Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Narayan Design Lab, and a new gymnasium and theater located in the Bozich Center for Athletics and Performing Arts.
