Reapportionment Commission to hold public hearing for Lahaina area
The State Reapportionment Commission will be holding a series of virtual public hearings on the proposed reapportionment plan.
Maui hearings are set for 6 p.m. on Dec. 6 for the Lahaina geographic area and Dec. 7 for Kahului.
The proposed plan is a starting point for developing the congressional and legislative districts lines that will be used for the next ten years.
The commission is encouraging citizens to use the Hawaii Redistricting Online application to draw and submit their own plans for review.
Within the application, users must meet the criteria to ensure compact, contiguous districts that are approximately equal in population.
“Our commission wants to hear and understand as much public input as possible, so we can create and adopt the best electoral districting plan for the state,” said Dr. Mark Mugiishi, chair of the 2022 Reapportionment Commission.
“We are hoping for and encouraging good turnout and dialogue at these public hearings.”
The hearings will be held via Zoom video conference. Information about the meeting, including dates, links to join the meeting and how to submit testimony, is posted on the Reapportionment Commission webpage through elections.hawaii.gov.

Following the public hearings, the Reapportionment Commission will revise the plan and adopt a final version by the end of February 2022. The final plan will be implemented for the 2022 Elections.
