NAPILI — George Kahumoku Jr.’s Slack Key Show – Masters of Hawaiian Music is presenting two shows per week throughout October.
Special guest artists include slack and steel guitarist Ken Emerson on Saturday, Oct. 2, and recent Grammy Award-winning slack key guitarist Kimo West on Saturday, Oct. 6.
Grandmaster of Slack Key Led Kaapana will headline the 18th Anniversary Show celebration on Wednesday, Oct. 20.
Emerson plays a unique blend of blues/jazz/Hawaiian guitar. Early in his extensive music career, he teamed with his brother, Phil, as The Emerson Brothers and played alongside such Hawaiian icons as Gabby Pahinui, Genoa Keawe, Raymond Kane and Moe Keale.
Later, Ken won the prestigious Kahili Award for perpetuating Hawaiian culture and was a featured artist and composer on the first Grammy Award-winning recording for Best Hawaiian Album.
He is a 2021 Grammy winner for his recent CD, “More Guitar Stories,” and a 2019 Grammy nominee for “Moku Maluhia-Peaceful Island.” He is also a four-time Na Hoku Hanohano finalist.
An interesting fact: this highly skilled multi-genre guitarist is the longtime lead guitarist for music humorist Weird Al.
