LAHAINA — Lahaina News Editor Mark Vieth on Dec. 15 received the prestigious Mahalo Award for the year 2020, which was presented by Barbara Potts, newly elected president, and Richard Endsley, co-founder and past president of the Lahaina Complex Education Foundation.

This award is normally presented at the annual awards ceremony in the springtime, but with the advent of COVID-19, that event had to be canceled.

The annual award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to education and the community of Lahaina.

Over two decades of providing services to Lahaina schools, the Lahaina Complex Education Foundation has presented an annual Mahalo Achievement Award to outstanding supporters: Mayor Alan Arakawa with his wife Ann, Susan Bendon and family, Stuart and Debbi Katz, Jerry Kunitomo, Marsha Nakamura, Nancy Cross, Barbara and Lee Potts, Leilani’s on the Beach, The Ritz-Carton Resort and Spa, and the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise.

According to the foundation, “Mark has made great contributions over the many years to the Lahaina Tutor Program and the community by writing and publishing articles about the tutor program and publicizing events and informing the community of progress by and accomplishments of the tutor program.

“The LCEF board will continue to present Mahalo Awards to individuals and groups as a way of expressing our appreciation for supporting Lahaina youngsters and their families. In addition, the Tutor Project will begin to accept proposals for grants that will enrich programs for students in Lahaina.”
