Lahaina community loses Helen Reed
LAHAINA – Helen Reed, 95, of Marina del Rey, California; Lahaina, Maui; and most recently, Santa Monica, CA, passed away peacefully on Oct. 4, 2019.
She was born on Aug. 6, 1924 in Los Angeles, California.
Reed grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from Fremont High School in 1941. She attended Valley Junior College and UCLA, studying psychology, philosophy, humanities and writing.
She met her husband-to-be, Robert Reed, in 1961, and they were married on July 1, 1962.
The couple lived an adventurous life, sailing all over the Caribbean on their 75-foot charter yacht, Eudroma, for ten years.
This is where Helen, a.k.a. “Charlie,” honed her creative culinary skills by preparing beautiful meals for their guests with the scant choices available on the islands.
Eventually they moved to Maui, where they lived for 30 years.
Rob and Charlie valued every minute of their life on Maui and their extensive Maui family. They were enthusiastically involved with community activities.
Charlie was a long-standing member of the Lahaina Rotary Club and the West Maui community.
She was a seasoned traveler and well-known as a travel and food writer. She absolutely loved her time as the food columnist of the Lahaina News and at age 85 published “Treasures of the Thirties,” her memoirs of her life growing up in Long Beach during the Great Depression.
Scattering of Ashes and Celebration of Life will be held Jan. 11, 2020 in Marina del Rey.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Carol; granddaughter, Shanon; grandson, Gabi; and great-grandchildren Jordane, Elise, Addison and Logan.
She is predeceased by her son, Gary Alan Glover, and the love of her life and best friend, Robert “Papa” Reed, her adoring husband of 55 marvelous years together.
