KAHULUI – In response to multiple requests, cannabis researcher and author Michael Backes is headed to West Maui for his next “Lunch & Learn” presentation slated for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Imua Family Services Office at 930 Wainee St. in Lahaina.

Registration is $20 and includes class materials and a deli buffet lunch.

To register, or for more information, visit www.lahainalunchandlearn.eventbrite.com.

His presentation, “Medical Cannabis: What You Should Know,” is designed for those considering medical cannabis for themselves or a loved one. Cannabis is recognized as a safe, effective and natural way to help manage a variety of conditions and symptoms, including pain, nausea, muscle spasms, insomnia and anxiety.

Many of Maui’s 5,556 registered patients use cannabis as a complement, or alternative, to opiates to help relieve chronic, severe pain.

This presentation will cover Hawaii’s Medical Cannabis Program, smoke-free cannabis, dosing and special information for seniors.

“The ‘Lunch & Learn’ series at the U.H. Maui College has been so popular that our West Maui friends suggested we also present on the other side of the Pali,” said Backes. “Many thanks to Dean Wong and the good people at Imua Family Services for working with us to provide a convenient location in Lahaina.”

Backes will discuss Hawaii’s qualifying conditions for using cannabis as well as the latest research on CBD and THC. If you, or someone you love, is considering medical cannabis therapy, this class is for you.

Backes will also explain smoke-free methods of administration, and the latest research about THC, CBD and other therapeutic plant compounds. He will also explain the conditions that qualify patients to use cannabis legally in the Aloha State. The final 30 minutes are reserved for audience Q&A.

Backes founded Cornerstone Research Collective, the nation’s first evidence-based medical cannabis dispensary. He currently serves as curriculum and training advisor for Maui Grown Therapies in Kahului, and he is a member of their Science & Medical Advisory Board.
