LAHAINA – Open houses will be held April 3 and 6 at the West Maui Senior Center to receive public input on planning alternatives to manage change in West Maui over the next 20 years, the County of Maui Department of Planning announced.

These open houses will be the last opportunity for public input before a draft of the updated West Maui Community Plan is submitted to the West Maui Community Plan Advisory Committee in late spring.

The senior center is located at 788 Pauoa St. in Lahaina. Meeting times are from 5 to 8 p.m. on April 3 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 6.

An online open house at www.wearemaui.org will also be available from April 3 to 10.

With a projected demand of nearly 7,000 new homes in West Maui over the next 20 years, planners have analyzed two years of public input and critical infrastructure data to prepare alternatives to help meet this need.

At the open house, participants will be asked to provide input on the proposed alternatives and learn about community plan designations.

“We hope the public will see that we really listened to them when they review these planning alternatives,” said Long-Range Planning Division Chief Pam Eaton.

“There are many ways to manage change, but the most important thing we can do is plan wisely so we protect the things the community cares about.”

Public input will help county staff planners finalize one or more land use alternatives for the community plan advisory committee to consider.

The public will have additional opportunities to comment once the committee begins its work.
