West Maui Community Plan resource papers are available

By Staff | Nov 1, 2018

WAILUKU – The County of Maui Department of Planning invites the public to review technical resource papers and provide input for the update of the West Maui Community Plan.

The technical resource papers, prepared by the county, are background documents that cover a range of topics.

The papers provide a snapshot of West Maui’s existing conditions and highlight future needs, key challenges and potential strategies and actions that could be pursued.

The first set of papers available for review include Housing, Water, and Wastewater. Other topics will be made available over the next few months.

The technical resource papers provide a great way for the community to review information on important topics and provide their feedback in preparation for upcoming land use workshops. The papers are accessible through the county’s community planning website: www.wearemaui.org.

The county encourages the public to read through the papers and answer accompanying questions on the website.

The technical resource papers, upcoming land use workshops and the community’s input will serve as the base from which the plan is drafted.

The West Maui Community Plan will guide future growth in West Maui, and is the first of Maui Island’s six regional community plans to be updated since the adoption of the Maui Island Plan in 2012. The existing West Maui Community Plan was adopted in 1996.

The update process has and will continue to involve numerous community meetings and workshops. The review process formally begins with the Community Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC), which will review a draft updated plan and provide recommendations. The Maui Planning Commission will then review the draft updated plan, and the Maui County Council will review and adopt the updated plan.

In addition, the Department of Planning invites the public to participate in the “We Are West Maui Photo Contest” on Facebook and Instagram as part of the process to update of the West Maui Community Plan.

The contest is a fun way for people to get involved in the process to update the community plan and share what they care about.

The county is looking for photos that capture the people and lifestyle of West Maui, the places that are loved and the issues community members are concerned about. Categories include:

People and Lifestyle: Photos of individuals or groups of people as they live, work and play in West Maui.

Places: Locales within West Maui.

Issues and Concerns: Photos that show an issue the community is concerned with and wants to address.

Top photos and honorable mention will be featured in the community plan and on the county’s website and social media pages.

The contest is open to anyone who lives, works, or plays in West Maui. Submissions can be made through Facebook, Instagram or by email at wearewestmaui@mauicounty.gov. The contest ends 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov, 30, 2018.

More information about the contest rules and the West Maui Community Plan update can be found at www.wearemaui.org, and on Facebook and Instagram @wearemaui.
