Here is the latest update from Maui County:

Hurricane Lane is a category 2 hurricane with winds of up to 105 miles per hour. A Hurricane Warning, High Surf Warning and Flash Flood Watch are still in effect for all of Maui County.

As Hurricane Lane continues its slow march, airlines continue to cancel their flights to and from Kahului Airport. American Airlines canceled all flights today, joining United Airlines, Ohana Airlines, Mokulele Airlines and Aloha Airlines Cargo. Alaska Airlines early flights between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. today were also canceled.

In a major development, Maui police have reopened Honoapiilani Highway in both directions. The highway had been closed earlier due to a 300-acre brush fire. It is unknown at this time whether the fire is storm-related; however, wind gusts overnight helped to spread the fire quickly, said Maui fire fighters.

As a safety precaution, Maui police evacuated more than 100 households in the Puamana Subdivision as well as those living along Punakea Loop and Lahainaluna Road. The fire also forced the closure of the storm evacuation shelter at Lahaina Intermediate. Evacuees were transferred to Lahaina Civic Center. At this time, it is estimated that there are 300 evacuees inside the civic center with another 200 outside on the property.

Other shelter numbers are as follows: Maui High – 225; Lokelani – 75; King Kekaulike – 64; Molokai High – 21; Lanai High – 17; and Hana High – 2

Some time after the first fire began, a second fire popped up in the Kaanapali area, causing Maui police to evacuate Kaanapali Hillside homes. It is unknown at this time how many homes were evacuated from the second brush fire.

One person has been injured from the fire; a female with burns on her arms and legs was medivaced to Oahu early this morning. There is no other information on the victim at this time.

Because of the fires, the Department of Water Supply has asked that all county and private water customers in Lahaina, Launiupoko and Kaanapali conserve water. This will help ensure fire fighters have enough water to battle the two brush fires.

From Maui Humane Society: FOR ANYONE READING THIS IN LAHAINA: Maui Humane Society was forced to leave all of our supplies at the school in evacuation and we are unable to get supplies to Civic Center to help storm and fire evacuees. If you are able to help with supplies, please deliver directly to the Civic Center, downstairs area across from police station. We need: crates for animals (can be pop crates or carriers), water/food bowls, DRY food for dogs and cats, litter boxes and kitty litter, poop bags and spare leashes. WE ALSO NEED WATER.

From Maui Electric (7 a.m.): Maui Electric crews have been redeployed this morning and are addressing the issue to bring customers safely back online as quickly as possible. Currently, there are about 4,000 customers in the West Maui area without power. On Molokai, about 2,600 customer are experiencing a power outage. Cause of the outages is being assessed.

Should weather conditions worsen, work may need to halt to ensure the safety of MECO folks in the field. Crews will continue to respond as long as conditions remain safe for them to do so.
