Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race under way
LAHAINA – The historic “Vic-Maui” race is under way. Boats departed from Victoria, British Columbia, on July 1 and will begin arriving on Maui from July 10 until the race time?limit of July 20.
This year’s race includes nine boats – five American teams and four Canadian teams. The two cruising class boats are Gemini’s Dream and Serenite, the racing class Division One includes Joyride and Firefly, and Division Two includes Turnagain, Salient, Oxomoxo, Kraken and Anjo.
The race can be followed on the free YB Tracking app available for mobile phones. Download it from the www.vicmaui.org site or directly from the App Store.
The Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race, first contested in 1965 and sailed every second year since 1968, is the pinnacle of Pacific Northwest ocean racing that covers a distance on the rhumbline of 2,308 nautical miles.
“Vic-Maui” challenges sailors to demonstrate their ocean sailing and weather routing skills. The Lahaina and Royal Vancouver Yacht Clubs co-host this international yacht race from Victoria, B.C., to Lahaina.
The start venue is Victoria on Canada’s West Coast. The fleet starts just outside the harbor, sails out of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, leaves Cape Flattery on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula to port, and heads across the Northeast Pacific Ocean.
Boats aim to sail around the North Pacific High and into the trade winds for the subtropical run to Hawaii. Days and nights at sea pass with sightings of whales, dolphins and albatross under spectacular sunrises, sunsets and brilliant starry nights.
The finish venue is Lahaina. As each boat crosses the finish line, the boat and crew are warmly welcomed in the Hawaiian tradition, with greeting teams providing a welcoming party at the Pioneer Inn in Lahaina.
After they complete the race, the crew, family and friends enjoy vacationing on Maui and attend an awards banquet.
Lahaina Yacht Club and Royal Vancouver Yacht Club appreciate the support of the local community. Residents participate as sponsors by assisting with greetings, donations or volunteering along with members. “Vic-Maui” has the distinction of being the only trans-Pacific international yacht race that starts in a foreign country but finishes in the U.S.A. – right here in Lahaina.
