MAALAEA – State Rep. Angus L.K. McKelvey (West Maui, Maalaea, North Kihei) recently presented a certificate to the U.S. Coast Guard District 14 in recognition of “the important work they do in protecting our Maui waters” as part of National Safe Boating Week.

Observed from May 19-25 this year, National Safe Boating Week began 60 years ago to encourage all boaters, paddlers, sailors and fishermen to enjoy America’s waters responsibly.

According to McKelvey, the U.S. Coast Guard estimates that human error accounts for 70 percent of all boating accidents.

“Through basic boating safety procedures – carrying lifesaving emergency distress and communications equipment – boaters can stay safe on the water… ” said McKelvey.

“On average, 650 people die each year in boating-related accidents in the U.S., and thousands more are injured. It’s through the hard work and steadfast vigilance of the men and women of the Coast Guard that many accidents have been prevented and lives saved.”
