Lahainaluna High School Foundation to administer $138,000 in scholarships
LAHAINA – The Lahainaluna High School Foundation announced that during this scholarship season, it will be administering 67 scholarships, including renewals, for a total award amount of $138,000.
Lahainaluna seniors can apply for all scholarships through a common application form available on the LHSF website and through the school’s College and Career Counseling Center.
This is the foundation’s 17th year awarding scholarships. The application deadline is Tuesday, April 3.
This year, there will be four inaugural scholarships: the $1,500 Eugene Baybado (LHS Class of ’64) Memorial (two awards), $2,000 Class of 1968 50th Reunion Scholarship, and the $1,000 Sammy Kadotani Service Award.
An anonymous donor just presented LHSF with a $1,000 scholarship for a student who plans on becoming a teacher. The scholarship is named the Andrew Kutsunai Scholarship in honor of Kutsunai for his exemplary service as a former LHS teacher and his service to the foundation as a board member, creating and building the scholarship program.
In addition, the foundation will be offering multiple one-year scholarships (up to $4,200) to the University of Hawaii Maui College. Details will be released soon.
Continuing their support for this important program in the amount of $500 scholarships are Mark & Judy Ellman, Bonnie Ann Fijal Memorial, Ilocandia Filipino Store, Lahaina Fish Co., Lahaina Hawaiian Civic Club, Holly and Rob Manning-Homes & Land Magazine of Maui, Mint Green House, RVN Restaurant, and Valley Isle Community Federal Credit Union.
Scholarships for $1,000 will be provided by 5A Rent-A-Space, Maureen Setsuko Ariyoshi Memorial, Luly Baker, Bank of Hawaii-Lahaina Branch, Boss Frog’s Dive & Surf, Central Pacific Bank-Lahaina Branch, Ebrahim Gabbay M.D. Memorial, Blackie Gadarian Vocational (three awards), Ka Ipukukui ‘A Mau Pio ‘Ole I Ke Kaua’ula, Kaanapali Land Management Corp., Sgt. James Kusuda Memorial, Lahainaluna Boarders’ Association, Lahainaluna High School Foundation (four scholarships), Na Hoaloha Ekolu (plus renewals), Alfredo “Fred” Sarian Memorial, Sentry Tournament of Champions, Territorial Savings-Lahaina Branch, The Masters at Kaanapali Hillside-Blaze Kalilikani Memorial, TS Restaurants – Duke’s Beach House, Hula Grill, Kimo’s and Leilani’s on the Beach (four scholarships), Maui County Federal Credit Union (five awards), Shelton ‘Ohana (plus renewals) and the Kelsi Ka’ahui & Chanse Uyeda Memorial.
Other scholarships include the $1,500 Kiiko and Juan Cabanilla Sr.; $1,500 Roy and Betty Sakamoto (plus renewals); $1,500 H & K Takenaga Legacy; $2,000 Kihachiro J. Hotta Memorial Endowed; $2,500 Steven R. Strong, M.D., Memorial; $5,000 Makana Aloha Foundation (plus renewals); $10,000 Shigeru & Toyoko Ichiki Endowed (plus renewals); and $20,000 Front Street (renewal).
