LAHAINA – Lahaina Restoration Foundation is pleased to announce a re-opening celebration of its expanded Plantation Museum at The Wharf Cinema Center as part of the Lahaina Second Friday Town Party events on Nov. 10 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Free and open to the public, this celebration of West Maui’s plantation life will include refreshments at the museum located on the upper level of The Wharf Cinema Center at 658 Front St. in Lahaina.

Next door in Campbell Park on the Lahaina Second Friday stage, Lahaina Restoration Foundation will present a slideshow of Plantation Era photos from its archives along with a screening of the locally produced video “The Last Harvest,” about the closure of Pioneer Mill Co., beginning at 7 p.m. Popular entertainer Kathy Collins will serve as emcee.

The expanded museum space features attractive displays of heirlooms, appliances, tools and sports gear from plantation camps and family homes in Lahaina.

Updated exhibits include historic photos and colorful displays portraying the pineapple and sugar plantation lifestyle, large interpretive panels describing the multi-ethnic cultural groups who lived in the plantation camps, and an electronic display of West Maui Plantation Camp Maps on a flat screen.

Students from Lahainaluna High School who were live-streaming their recent visit to the Plantation Museum noted, “This is so great – a museum about us and our heritage!”

Also part of the Lahaina Second Friday events on Nov. 10, The Village Galleries will host a gala reception for its exhibition “How Sweet It Was,” featuring the Jo Rockwell art collection that depicts Maui’s sugar mills along with scenes of plantation life on Maui by the gallery’s local artists.

The reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. in The Village Galleries located at 120 Dickenson St. (behind Baldwin Home Museum) in Lahaina.

Initially created from the popularity of Lahaina’s Plantation Days event and continually updated with support from the Maui community, the Plantation Museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is always free.
