LAHAINA – On Saturday, Sept. 30, Women Helping Women’s West Maui Task Force will host the sixth annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event at the Outlets of Maui from 8 a.m. until noon.

An International Men’s March designed to open communication in the community about the serious issues of sexual and domestic violence, the walk allows men to show their support and understanding of women’s experiences by literally walking in their shoes.

The Maui version combines the goal of raising awareness with that of raising funds to benefit Women Helping Women, the local nonprofit organization whose mission is to end domestic violence.

Walkers are encouraged to bring along their family and friends, as the event promises to be a fun, entertaining and memorable morning for all who attend.

The event will be emceed by Joe Hawkins from KONI 104.7 FM, and live music will be provided by Darren Lee (Elvis from “Burn’n Love”) and Fred’s Garage.

Before marching, walkers will be pumped up with an inspiring Zumba warm-up, and the event will also feature a photo booth, face painting, henna tattoos, balloon twisting, massage chair, refreshments, prize drawings and giveaways.

Completely volunteer-organized, the event depends heavily on community support in the form of sponsorship and donations to ensure both its success and that Women Helping Women will receive the totality of funds raised in the process.

Sponsors and donors will be acknowledged in all collateral materials, including flyers; communications with West Maui’s most influential business leaders; public service announcements on KONI, Mana’o Radio and Hawaii Public Radio; and articles and post-event mahalo pages published in The Maui News and Lahaina News.

Donors will be listed on a sponsor board at the event, and Emcee Hawkins will publicly thank all who contributed.

Generous sponsors so far include Outlets of Maui, “Burn’n Love,” KONI 104.7 FM, HMSA, Williams & Associates, 5A Rent-a-Space, Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset, Skechers, Keoni’s Hot Lava DanceFit, Cirque Jolie and 808PhotoBombs.

Walkers can register online to participate in the event by going to www.womenhelpingwomenmaui.com/events/6th-annual-walk-a-mile/. Early registration is highly encouraged – the first 100 registrants will be entered into an early-bird draw to win a cash prize of $100.

For those who wish to raise money for Women Helping Women, an optional pledge form for sponsorship is also available, and prizes will be given to the walker or team with the best costume, most sponsors and largest donation.

Registration begins at 8 a.m.; the cost is $20 to register and includes an event backpack, T-shirt, one entry to the prize drawing, merchant coupons and free parking.
