Maui Bus schedule changes to create more efficient Lahaina connection to Kapalua

WAILUKU – Mayor Alan Arakawa and Don Medeiros, director of the County of Maui Department of Transportation, announced that the Maui Bus system has revised two bus routes to offer riders a more direct route to Kapalua and Honolua, as well as expanded service hours that will allow Hawaiian Homes residents in Kula to make the morning connection to West Maui.

The Kaanapali and Napili Islander routes were combined into one new route called the West Maui Islander Route #28. This bus travels the same route from the Wharf Cinema Center, to Kaanapali, to Napili and then extend into Kapalua with a stop near the Honolua Store.

The timing of the route will remain essentially the same; the main difference is that passengers will not have to transfer buses at Whalers Village to get to and from Lahaina or Kapalua.

The Kula Villager Route #39 extended service hours beginning at 5:30 a.m. from Hawaiian Homelands to allow connection with the Upcountry Islander at Kulamalu every one-and-a-half hours beginning at 6:38 a.m.

“We continue to make changes to improve our overall bus system,” said Director Medeiros. “We are glad to be able to extend earlier service for Kula residents, and add Kapalua to the West Maui route.”

Paul Brown, executive director of the Kapalua Resort Association, said they “are excited that the Maui Bus will be able to extend service into Kapalua, providing access to residents, visitors and employees of Kapalua.”

The West Maui Islander and Kula Villager bus schedule and maps are posted on the county website at www.mauicounty.gov/bus.

Riders are able to track their bus in real-time and get arrival predictions using the TransLoc Rider app available on iOS and Android or at mauibus.transloc.com.
