New Earth Day event to highlight the West Maui Greenway project
LAHAINA – The West Maui Greenway Earth Day celebration is set for this Saturday. To encourage individuals and families to go green for Earth Day, event organizers have introduced a free raffle attendees can participate in to earn cool treats and prizes.
Free raffle tickets can be earned by participating in eco-actions such as walking or cycling to the event and participating in some of the green scheduled activities at “Love the West Maui Greenway Day” from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Lahaina Civic Center Amphitheater.
The itinerary has been updated and is complete with even more free activities and performances to celebrate the West Maui Greenway project.
The morning’s “Get Fit the Green Way” activities will kick-off with traditional chanting by Wainani Kealoha, an all experience level yoga class by Good Karma Yoga, a “Let’s Move” hip-hop lesson by Body in Balance Maui, hula hooping, face painting and more.
There will also be ongoing guided exploration rides and walks of a section of the greenway project as well as a community art project with Maui Art School.
Stay through the afternoon for chanting by Keoki Sousa, a hula show by Old Lahaina Luau and music provided by Melinda Carroll, Anthony Pfluke and Fred’s Garage.
Special guest speakers are County Managing Director Keith Regan, Executive Assistant to the Mayor Don Couch, State Sen. Roz Baker, County Councilmember Elle Cochran and State Rep. Angus McKelvey
A variety of food and drink options will be available throughout the day, including Barefruit Bar, Gus’ Hawaiian Shave Ice, El Taco Borracho, The Pizza Connection and more. Be sure to refuel at one of these vendors, who will all donate a percentage of their profits to the greenway project.
The West Maui Greenway project is a proposed 25-mile, multi-use trail that would use and transform the abandoned cane haul road along the West Maui Mountains.
The greenway would serve as a safe, family-friendly place for residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoors away from the heavy traffic on Honoapiilani Highway.
The event’s online silent auction is currently underway. The deadline is Saturday, April 22, at 6 p.m. to place bids for the chance to win gift certificates, merchandise and tickets generously donated by local businesses. All proceeds will go toward the advocacy, construction and maintenance of the greenway.
If you are interested in getting involved, consider signing up to volunteer at the event. There are last minute positions available for different time slots, and event organizers would love help from the community.
All volunteers will receive a free event T-shirt and have the opportunity to participate in event activities. Head to westmauigreenway.org/volunteer1 to sign up for an opportunity.
Bring your friends and family to help make this first-time event as fun and successful as possible. For last minute questions, e-mail maui@ hbl.org or call (808) 633-8553, extension 101.
