Couple receives dream gift of a Maui wedding
WEST MAUI – Fulfilling dreams isn’t something that most people ever get to experience, yet Coconut Condos continues to be honored to play a small part of helping terminally ill adults’ end-of-life dreams come true.
Coconut Condos recently helped facilitate its seventh dream with Dream Foundation, and the company was once again amazed at the outpouring of support from the West Maui community.
Jill Hill, an Oregon native, was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer two years ago, shortly after meeting her new husband, Richard. Her dream was to come to Maui to get married and to create some final happy memories with Richard.
“He has done so much for me these past few years, and I want him to be able to have a break and to see the Maui of my dreams,” stated Jill, as she prepared for their upcoming trip. “Richard laughs at me because I’ve had my suitcase out since Dream Foundation told us they were granting my dream.”
Her main goal while on Maui was to have a small wedding and marry Richard, and with the help of Maui’s Angels, the couple had the wedding of their dreams. Maui’s Angels generously donated their time and resources to organize every detail of the wedding. They went above and beyond, even changing days and the location to accommodate the weather and Jill’s health concerns.
“It is hard to understand sometimes why cancer takes so many lives, so to be able to give back in such a positive manner certainly makes me feel so blessed,” said Lorrie Betsill Nielson, owner of Maui’s Angels. “Jill and Richard are absolute sweethearts and seem to be blown away by everything and everyone.”
Nielson organized Mariah Millan Photography to take the stunning photos of the wedding and One Motion Films to video the ceremony, both companies donating their time to provide Richard with memories that will help sustain him through the tough road ahead.
Maui Bridal Hair and Makeup, Maui Executive Transportation, Cake Fanatics and Officiate Peter Daguipon also all jumped at the chance to volunteer their time and talent when Nielson and Maui’s Angels asked them to participate in the wedding.
The couple had the pleasure of staying at a two-bedroom/two-bath condo at Aina Nalu, which was generously donated by Jeanine and Graham Billingham, owners with Coconut Condos. Jill’s best friend, Becky Peters, joined them on Maui for the wedding and was grateful to be able to stay with Jill and Richard for a few days as well. “This really, really rejuvenated her,” said Peters.
The Drums of the Pacific Luau, via Monica Chihara, generously donated two VIP tickets for the Hills to attend the luau.
Pat McDowell of Hertz made sure that the Hills drove around Maui in true island style by giving them a VIP rate on a Jeep, and Jerry Lynch and Ian McManus, developers of Aina Nalu, donated complimentary parking at Aina Nalu for the duration of their stay.
The generous spirit of Maui doesn’t end there; The Snorkel Store, Merriman’s Kapalua, and Maui Tropical Plantation all jumped at the chance to help create the perfect dream vacation for Jill and Richard.
Unfortunately, due to Jill’s health, they weren’t able to utilize these gifts, but they were still awed by the willingness of the community to do so much for them.
“I can’t believe everything everyone has done for us. This trip gave me hope and gave me the energy to last a few more days,” said Jill. “I just wish Richard and I had another 50 years.”
