New coalition working to help the homeless
LAHAINA – Members of Waiola Church and its neighbors recently formed the Lahaina Community Coalition (LCC), seeking to get shelter for homeless people in West Maui.
While initial meetings explored ways to meet all the various needs of the homeless, as well as how to protect public and private property from destruction by the homeless, the group has decided to focus on housing as the most urgent need.
LCC will hold a meeting for the public on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. in the social hall (Keopuolani) at Waiola Church, 535 Wainee St.
Participants can expect to join an action team and focus on one particular aspect of the situation; for example, working with the state Governor’s Office, county Department of Housing and Human Concerns, private foundations, or builders of small homes.
