LAHAINA – Have you seen brown water in the ocean in West Maui? If you have ever wondered what’s in the water and what you can do about it, join Hui O Ka Wai Ola for a community meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the Lahainaluna High School cafeteria from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Hui O Ka Wai Ola (Association of The Living Waters) is a group of water quality champions who are helping gather data to learn about what’s in the water and what we can do about it.

Members of the group will share results from water samples taken in West Maui over the last six months, why it’s important, what’s next, and how you can help become a member of the Clean Ocean Team. The group needs volunteers to help with data entry, outreach and education with schools, bookkeeping, donations and sampling.

The meeting will include a presentation followed by small group interactive conversations with staff and volunteers. Topics will include upcoming training opportunities for sampling volunteers, non-sampling volunteer opportunities, demonstration of water quality testing equipment, discussion of coastal water quality issues, and how donations can help.

Light pupus will be provided.

Hui O Ka Wai Ola is a partnership between the Maui Nui Marine Resources Council, The Nature Conservancy, West Maui Ridge to Reef, and University of Hawaii Maui College.
