KAHULUI – Considering a career in healthcare? Or are you already a dental assistant looking to improve your skills?

EdVenture at the University of Hawaii Maui College is offering a new seven-week course, Dental Assisting Training, starting on Jan. 7 to provide a fast track to a career in oral health.

“Many dentists have informed the college that basic training for dental assistants would be beneficial for the dental profession and the community in general,” said Rosie Vierra, the Dental Hygiene Program coordinator at UH Maui College.

“Students will learn basic skills and instrumentation, as well as how to take radiographs, and some practice management skills, including communication and customer service,” Vierra said.

“This training program is designed for existing staff in the dental industry or those looking to move into a new career in dental health,” said instructor Kari Rodrigues.

The 60-hour course will provide in-class lectures, lab work and clinical rotations in local dental offices to teach, assess and evaluate learning. Participants will earn a Dental Assisting Training certificate.

The new training program will be offered on Fridays and Saturdays from Jan. 7 to Feb. 18. Learn more at maui.hawaii.edu/dental. The course fee is $495.
