Enrollment open for February plein air art workshop by renowned artists

By Staff | Nov 24, 2016

Jason Sacran’s “Lahaina Dusk” oil painting earned “Best in Show” honors at the 2016 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational.

LAHAINA – Maui Arts League and the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational Committee have opened enrollment for a four-day plein air art workshop from Feb. 27 to March 2, 2017, featuring two renowned artist instructors. This “2 for 1” painting workshop is open to artists and art students, beginner to advanced levels.

Award-winning plein air artists Jason Sacran and John P Lasater IV will instruct and coach students on “Finding Your Edge” with a robust schedule of hands-on painting at several outdoor locations in West Maui.

Tinged with good-natured fun, their tips and tricks will teach students how to focus their talent and seriously take their artwork to the next level.

This kind of intense instruction with nationally ranked professional artists is a rare opportunity for local artists and students, who would have to travel to the Mainland for equivalent training.

Known for their strings of awards at national competitions, Sacran and Lasater excel at design, sophisticated color mixing, paint application and edge-control.

Students will compose several landscapes in West Maui. While painting the beautiful motifs of Maui’s light, atmosphere and textures, Sacran and Lasater will translate and demystify the primary language of visual art design. They will also narrate and demonstrate their two unique methods of paint application and interpretation, inviting student discussions.

Students will be encouraged to see landscapes and figures more perceptually and to paint with less trepidation. The instructors will engage students in many opportunities to paint and to achieve mastery through creative critique.

Tuition is $650 plus tax and fees for those who enroll before Dec. 31. Seats are limited, and if there are late openings, late tuition will be $700 plus tax and fees. For detailed workshop information, visit www.MauiPleinAirPainting.org.
