Lahaina Harborfront Project close to completion
LAHAINA – Halloween came and went, and we have yet to finish the Lahaina Harborfront Project… but we are very close! Please take a walk down to the harbor if you have not yet seen the progress on the project.
We are now doing the finishing touches on the paver installation. The shade trellises are built, painted, and stephanotis has been planted next to each upright and is being trained to climb up and over the structures. The other planters are now filled with kou trees with ilima as a ground cover. The planter with the four royal palms has lau’ae fern as a ground cover.
We cast four new cement cradles to hold the four cannons tall and proud. If you remember, the cannons were lying on the ground before this project because the cradles had completely disintegrated. We also rebuilt the flag pole base, which was also in very bad physical shape. We still need to raise the funds to build a new flagpole, which broke in a heavy rainstorm several years ago.
We are building some short wooden benches and a few tables to provide seating under the trellises. Those should be installed shortly.
We are very excited to be finishing this community-planned project. We are planning a big community celebration the first part of December – details forthcoming.
We appreciate everyone’s patience while this project has been underway. We especially want to thank the people working in the harbor booths, as they were the most impacted.
