Mo‘okiha o Pi‘ilani has a new home

The voyaging canoe Mo‘okiha o Pi‘ilani has secured a new home with a permanent mooring permit at Maalaea Harbor.

MAALAEA – Hui o Wa’a Kaulua (The Assembly of the Double-Hull Canoes) recently announced that the voyaging canoe Mo’okiha o Pi’ilani has secured a new home with a permanent mooring permit at Maalaea Harbor.

Hui members thanked the Polynesian Voyaging Society, ‘Ohana Wa’a, private donors, and the county, state and federal officials who all did their part to help make history.

For their assistance in completing the required documents, Hui o Wa’a Kaulua thanked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, Maalaea harbormaster and staff, Department of Land & Natural Resources/Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation Engineer Eric Yuasa, Josh Murphree of Kai Hawai’i Inc., Steve Madaras and ‘ohana of Maui Moorings, and Chief Lee and the staff of the U.S. Coast Guard, Maalaea Harbor Station.

According to Hui o Wa’a Kaulua, having Mo’okiha o Pi’ilani in a permanent home at Maalaea Harbor will help the organization realize its vision to cultivate and support future generations of voyagers to perpetuate Hawaiian culture.
