LAHAINA – To honor cancer victims, survivors and loved ones lost to the disease, the American Cancer Society on July 18 will sponsor its annual Relay For Life of West Maui starting at 6 p.m. at Lahaina Recreation Center. Other Relay For Life commemorations are held around the globe, as well as in Central and South Maui each year.

Special teams of people who have a connection to cancer and representatives from leading non-profits, hotels and organizations will walk around a circuit that will be illuminated at nightfall by luminaria candles placed in honor of victims.

The first lap will be completed by survivors, and the second by caregivers and others touched by cancer. Among those participating in the overnight event will be Lahaina Rotary Walk for a Cause, made up of teams from Lahaina’s three Rotary Clubs. Teams for various restaurants and hotels will also be represented.

Each team will have a booth to showcase its activities and make a donation to the fight against cancer. Funds for research and education, according to the Relay For Life website, “truly make a difference in the fight against cancer. Just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year!”
