Explore Hawaiian culture at Celebration of the Arts
KAPALUA – The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua will convene Hawaii artisans, educators, cultural practitioners, speakers and entertainers on Friday and Saturday, May 8-9, during the 23rd annual Celebration of the Arts.
Hands-on art, demonstrations, films, cultural panels, music and dance will act as the common ground to allow visitors and residents the opportunity to interact and enjoy the “Number One-rated cultural event,” according to Hawaii Modern Luxury magazine.
Sessions and artisan stations are free unless otherwise noted.
The event opens with “The Legend of Ko’olau” play. Maui writer Gary Kubota is bringing his much-heralded, true-life story of a Hawaiian native, Ko’olau, to the shores of Kapalua. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children ages 5-12.
This one-man play with actor Moronai Kanekoa tells of the plight of Ko’olau, a Kauai cowboy who refused to be separated from his family despite his illness with Hansen’s Disease.
Don’t miss the grand finale, The Celebration Luau, Show and Concert, on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Enjoy a Hawaiian feast and entertainment by Ahumanu, Kumu Carson Kamaka Kukona and Halau Hula O Ka Hanu Lehua, and Eric Gilliom and his band.
Luau ticket prices are $125 for premium seating ($60 per child ages 5-12). General admission tickets are $100 for adults and $50 for children.
On Sunday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., celebrate Mom with a lavish Mother’s Day Brunch at The Terrace Restaurant. This brunch buffet features traditional and local favorites. Admission is $65 per adult and $32.50 per child (exclusive of tax and gratuity).
