Lahaina tutor project honors outstanding students of the year
LAHAINA – On Thursday, April 9, the Lahaina Complex After School Tutor Project celebrated its 14th year of volunteer tutoring services to the four Lahaina public schools.
Approximately 375 participants celebrated to honor student achievements and to express gratitude to tutors, parents and supporters. Ninety students received achievement awards, and four students were named the most outstanding.
The 2014-15 most outstanding students were honored along with their tutors and parents:
Logan Hanohano – Perfect attendance for drama, reading and math with Tutors Art Tabanao, San Michels and Kristi Scott; Kokoro Yamasaki – Perfect attendance for reading and math with Tutors Barbara Potts and Jane Huff; Malia Kaufononga – Perfect attendance for reading and math, and Practice at Home Completion Achievement, with Tutors Art Tabanao, Richard Endsley, Monica Chihara, Sean Kim and Sherlyn Dagdagan; Avirilyne Quimangan – Practice at Home Completion Achievement with Tutor Pat Endsley.
Mayor Alan Arakawa and Maui District Superintendent Lindsay Ball expressed gratitude to everyone. Sen. Roz Baker presented gratitude commendations from the Hawaii State Legislature to the major tutor project sponsors.
Pat and Richard Endsley, co-founders of the project and also tutors, thanked everyone who helped to make the event a huge success.
They also thanked Old Lahaina Luau staff for donating orchid leis and Terry Shibao from Photo Imaging Hawaii for the beautiful photographs of the event.
