By Staff | Sep 4, 2014

LAHAINA – The Lahaina Complex Free After School Tutoring Project looks forward to another successful and exciting year of enrichment reading, writing and math programs for students in grades 3-8 at King Kamehameha III, Princess Nahienaena and Lahaina Intermediate schools.

Also, Theater Theater Maui drama classes will be offered again at Lahaina Intermediate School.

This year’s student achievement awards will emphasize astronomy rewards at Lahaina Intermediate. Dr. J.D. Armstrong at the University of Hawaii Maui College and Haleakala Amateur Astronomers will reward achieving students with a visit to the Haleakala Observatories, followed by a night viewing of the nebulae, galaxies, star clusters and constellations. Roberts Hawaii will provide free transportation. In addition, the Hyatt Regency Maui will offer two free “Tour of the Stars” programs on the rooftop of the hotel.

All tutors received new or reviewed training in August and September. During the week of Sept. 8, students will receive acceptance letters to participate in tutoring programs. These students and their parents will meet with their tutors at their site’s orientation meeting. The schedule is: Monday, Sept. 15, King Kamehameha III School, meet with tutors in assigned rooms at 6:30 p.m., and program and refreshments in the cafeteria at 7:15 p.m.; Tuesday, Sept. 16, Lahaina Intermediate School, program and refreshments in the cafeteria from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and sky gazing with Haleakala astronomers on the grassy field on campus from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.; and Wednesday, Sept. 17, Princess Nahienaena School, meet with tutors in assigned rooms at 6:30 p.m., and program and refreshments in the cafeteria at 7:15 p.m.

Coordinator Pat Endsley noted, “We sincerely thank everyone for their continued support of this community-school partnership. Parents, tutors, site support personnel, sponsors and other volunteers, mahalo for making a positive difference in the lives of many of our Lahaina keiki!”
