Music lineup announced for Maui Jazz & Blues Festival

Soul jazz pianist and singer Les McCann is coming to West Maui to play in the Maui Jazz & Blues Festival.

WEST MAUI – The Royal Lahaina Resort, in partnership with HawaiiONTV.com Networks, Jazz Alley TV and BMW of Maui, will host the fourth annual Maui Jazz & Blues Festival on Sept. 4-8. The rhythmic sounds of jazz and blues will sweep through Kaanapali from the oceanfront setting of the Royal Lahaina, Duke’s Beach House and Hula Grill.

Throughout the week-long music festival, patrons will be treated to performances by jazz, blues, soul, funk and Zydeco legends, and Grammy and Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners.

Musicians slated to perform include pianist/vocalist Les McCann, trombonist and shell player Steve Turre from the NBC Saturday Night Live Band, New Orleans alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, saxophone master Javon Jackson, Zydecko accordion master Cory Ledet from Louisiana, jazz and blues guitarist Benny Uyetake and the Kalama Intermediate School Ukulele Jazz Cats, Zenshin Daiko taiko drummers, and Paula Fuga.

On Friday, Aug. 29, and Monday, Sept. 1, from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m., Jazz & Blues Fest Sunset Sails will be held on Kai Kanani. Space is limited for this intimate live jazz setting with cocktails from Ocean Vodka and pupus. Call 879-7218 for reservations.

The Maui Jazz & Blues Fest Kickoff will be held on Thursday, Sept. 4, at Duke’s from 5 to 7 p.m. Harrison, Turre, Ledet, and Benny Uyetake & Friends will provide some fantastic music to go with tantalizing food and drinks from the award-winning Duke’s Beach House. Call 662-2900 for reservations.

On Friday, Sept. 5, at Hula Grill from 6 to 8 p.m., enjoy a sneak peek with the festival artists. Call Hula Grill at 667-6636 for reservations.

On Saturday, Sept. 6, from 5 to 9 p.m., the fourth annual Maui Jazz & Blues Festival will be held at the Royal Lahaina Resort’s oceanfront venue. On Sunday, Sept. 7, the Live Jazzfest Brunch will be held at the Royal Lahaina Resort with special jazz festival guests from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 661-3611 for reservations.

In conjunction with the festival, Whole Foods Maui will host an Aloha Friday Music series from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with Fulton Tashombe, John Zangrando and Benny Uyetake & Friends. The same artists will perform every Tuesday and Thursday in August from 4 to 6 p.m. at Whalers Village in Kaanapali.

Teddy’s Bigger Burgers at Lahaina Gateway will have live jazz on Sunday, Aug. 31, with guitarist Benny Uyetake & Friends.
