Malama Aina Recycling Event slated in Napili

By Staff | May 22, 2014

A Malama Aina Recycling Event was held at Lahaina Cannery Mall in April.

WEST MAUI – Malama Maui Nui (formerly Community Work Day) will hold a Malama Aina Recycling Event on Saturday, May 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Napili Redemption Center parking lot.

Residents may bring their items to the site only during the designated hours when staff is present.

The following items will be accepted: scrap metal, appliances, HI-5 recyclables, cardboard, newspapers, usable clothing, household items, used eyeglasses and hearing aids, printers/copiers and ink cartridges, cell phones, telephone books, used cooking oil, books, magazines, DVDs, batteries (household, vehicle and power tool batteries) and electronic waste – televisions, computers, laptops and all components.

There is a $5 fee for recycling regular-sized or smaller tires.

Items that WILL NOT be accepted include green waste, landfillable trash, motor oil, vehicles, propane tanks, hazardous fluid or waste, and paint. Paper shredding will also not be available.

Malama Maui Nui (MMN) hosts Malama Aina Recycling Events at different locations across Maui County every month to provide one convenient location for the reuse, recycling and proper disposal of household items.

By providing the community with an alternative to the trashcan, MMN hopes to alleviate pressure on Maui County landfills and educate people on the different options available for proper waste management.

On Saturday, residents are encouraged to bring nonperishable food donations for Feed My Sheep, a unique mobile food distribution program for Maui families and individuals in need.

This month’s Malama Aina partners include Hammerhead Metals, Maui Friends of the Library, The Lions Club, Habitat for Humanity-Maui, Savers, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Pacific Biodiesel, Maui County Department of Environmental Management, Maui Disposal, INTRADE Corp., Maui Land & Pineapple Co. Inc., Napili Market and ARC of Maui County.
