Rick Nava running for West Maui council seat

LAHAINA – Frederick “Rick” Nava last week announced that he is seeking the West Maui seat on the Maui County Council in this year’s elections.
Incumbent Elle Cochran and Ka’ala Buenconsejo have also filed nomination papers to run for the West Maui seat.
Nava said, “My priorities are responsible growth, affordable housing and improved transportation for the people of Maui County. We must ensure that our keiki have a secure and vibrant future right here at home. Wherever they choose to live, be it Maui, Lanai or Molokai, they should have the opportunity to enjoy secure jobs and a quality of life second to none.
“In that regard, we must provide an adequate supply of housing, especially in West Maui, by collaborating on expediting the permitting process and taking other steps to encourage the development of affordable homes. We also need to address the need for transportation solutions to accommodate working people and Maui’s rising population,” Nava added.
A graduate of Lahainaluna High School, Nava is president-owner of Media Systems Inc., a photography and video production company. Prior to that, he held finance-related positions at major Maui resorts.
A retired veteran, he served for almost 30 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve as a rear detachment officer, combat engineer and finance specialist.
Nava has been active in the community for many years. He served a five-year stint with the Maui Police Commission, and in leadership positions with the Rotary Club of Lahaina and on the boards of various Lahaina and West Maui business groups, including the Maui Chamber of Commerce. He is involved with several Filipino civic organizations.
He and his wife, Severina, have two children, Aaron and Tiffany, and a grandson, Koby Lee.
Alan Fukuyama said, “Rick Nava is just the kind of leader we need on the Maui County Council: honest, dedicated and strong. His ideas for the future of our islands, and his commitment to seeing them through, will be of tremendous benefit, not only for us, but for future generations.”
Joe Pluta commented, “I’ve known Rick for many years and can attest to his desire to serve the people of this county. He’s a proven leader with the broad range of experience, insight and ability to work with people of all backgrounds and persuasions in solving the challenges we’re all facing.”
