KIHEI – Terez Amato, a Democrat from Kihei, announced that she is running for the State Senate District 6 seat held by Sen. Roz Baker.
As of press time, Amato and Lahaina residents Baker (D) and Bronson Kekahuna Kaahui (Libertarian) had pulled nomination papers to run for the post to represent West and South Maui.
The deadline for all candidates to file nomination papers is 4:30 p.m. on June 3.
The primary election is slated for Aug. 9 and the general election for Nov. 4.
Amato said, “Maui needs a senator who is working for the people, not for corporations.
“I will never take money from corporations or lobbyists. The people of Maui will always be assured that I am working for them, not for special interests.”
A single mother of four teenage children, Amato grew up in South and Central Maui and graduated from St. Anthony Jr./Sr. High School in 1993.
“Maui is my home,” she said. “I will always support Maui’s families, workers and small businesses.
“Keeping Maui free from toxins and pollution, and protecting the health of our people and our environment will always be one of my top priorities,” she said.
“That is something we can’t afford to compromise on, which is another reason why I will never take money from corporations or lobbyists. The people of Maui need to know for sure that their senator works for them.”
If elected, Amato will pursue strong limits on chemical pesticides and clear labeling of food.
“Taking care of Maui’s families starts with a clean and healthy environment free from toxic chemicals,” Amato said.
“We can create a strong economy with good jobs for everyone, while we keep Maui clean, healthy and prosperous for our families and our children.”
