Learn about Hawaiian Nation-building
LAHAINA – Are you Hawaiian? Na Kupuna O Maui invites you to talk story about the opportunity for Hawaiians to manage their own future and the future of their grandchildren.
“Come and register for nation-building. Have a voice! Vote for a delegate to repesent you. We encourage every Hawaiian to register,” noted Patty Nishiyama of Na Kupuna O Maui.
Volunteers will be at Lahaina Cannery Mall on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 8:30 p.m., through April 29. For information, call Nishiyama at (808) 281-5470.
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs plans to begin canvassing communities across Maui as part of a larger effort to ensure as many Native Hawaiians as possible are eligible to participate in the nation-building process.
Town hall-style meetings on the effort are planned for 5 p.m. on April 15 at Kihei Community Center and 5 p.m. on April 16 at Lahaina Civic Center (following enrollment from 1 to 5 p.m. in Lahaina).
Only Hawaiians on the roll will be eligible to participate in the Hawaiian nation-building process. More than 120,000 names are on the official roll. May 1 is the deadline to sign up.
