The annual celebration includes traditional makahiki games and demonstrations at 4 p.m.; poi, laulau, lomi salmon, pineapple and beverage supper at 5 p.m.; and the free sunset pageant at 6 p.m. featuring the Boarders’ Chorus and Hawaiiana Club.

LAHAINA – Lahainaluna High School’s 44th annual David Malo Day Ho’olaule’a will be held on Saturday, April 12, at the historic campus’ Boarders’ Field.

“Malama Kai” (Protect Our Ocean) is this year’s theme, as the school and community honor one of Lahainaluna’s first graduates and cultural patriots, David Malo.

The festivities begin at 4 p.m. with the traditional makahiki games and demonstrations, followed at 5 p.m. by a poi, laulau, lomi salmon, pineapple and beverage supper ($15), and the free sunset pageant at 6 p.m. featuring the Boarders’ Chorus and Hawaiiana Club.

Lori Gomez-Karinen, advisor to both organizations since their inception and program director, said it takes the entire LHS community to stage the event. “We are most appreciative and grateful for the excellent support and nurturing given us by our immediate community and from the island of Maui and beyond,” she said.

Ilima Greig-Hong and Robert Pomai Krueger are the choreographers and cultural consultants, Kahaala Greig and the students lead the music, and the boarding and cafeteria staff provide direction with the food preparation and field set-up. Call 662-4000.
