Learn the story behind ‘Soul Surfer’ at Surf Night at Sacred Hearts School

“Soul Surfer” stars AnnaSophia Robb (pictured), Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt.

LAHAINA – Many people have seen the movie “Soul Surfer,” the story of teenage champion surfer Bethany Hamilton’s courageous and inspirational fight back to competitive surfing after losing an arm in a shark attack.

She overcame the trauma of the attack with the help of Sarah Hill, who is Bethany’s life coach.

Hill guided Hamilton through recovery and has been an inspiration to the young surfer through her faith-based coaching.

On Saturday, Feb. 1, Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina will screen “Soul Surfer” with special guest Hill, who will give a talk called “A Call to All” and answer questions about the movie and Hamilton’s recovery.

This is a free event open to the whole community – students in fourth grade and up, as well as parents. Food will be on sale from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by the show in the school cafeteria.

Apart from seeing a really good movie, SHS Principal Susan Hendricks sees a message in the evening – particularly to young teens that they have to be ready for what life throws at them, whether positive or negative.

“It is important to develop life skills and a support system of family, friends and faith to deal with the ups and downs of life and to develop determination and perseverance, like Bethany, to carry on when times are tough,” she noted.

“Sarah’s experience in explaining how she helped a top-class athlete deal with such a life-changing event should make for an inspiring and entertaining evening.”
