Baldwin High School student Ryan Hanscam won two awards for “In the Smoke.”

LAHAINA – The nonprofit Lahaina Arts Association recently awarded partial scholarships to local students pursuing art in college as part of its 36th annual Art Exhibit and Partial Scholarship Contest.

Graduating high school seniors from Maui County submitted their art for exhibition and consideration in the scholarship competition.

A special Artist’s Reception was held in the Old Jail Gallery in the Old Lahaina Courthouse to award scholarships and honor contest participants.

Baldwin High School senior Ryan Hanscam won the Gianna Mitchell Best In Show $1,000 Award and LAA First Place Drawing $500 Award for “In the Smoke,” the Martin Rockwell First Place Painting $500 Award for “Giggly Moments,” and Gianna Mitchell First Place 3D $500 Award for “Untitled.”

The Haruto “Harry” Furuta First Place Mixed Media $500 Award went to Nalu Laurel for “Lurk.”

And the Robert Sumner Norton First Place Photography $500 Award went to Stephanie Lawless for “Psychedelic Love Affair.”

Funds for the top scholarship were raised at the Gianna Mitchell “4 the Luv of Art” event celebrating the life of the beloved Maui artist.

Lahaina Arts Association thanked all participating art students, art teachers, schools, donors and volunteers who make the scholarship program possible.

Lahaina Arts Association is a 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to providing Maui County youth access to the creative arts through education and artistic opportunities.

LAA offers free art classes to children on Maui and Molokai through the Maui Youth Art Outreach Program. LAA also provides a Youth Mentoring Program and awards partial tuition-assistance scholarships to graduating Maui County students.

LAA inspires creative thinking and artistic expression by creating opportunities for art education through the support of grants, foundations and individual donations.
