The ninth annual Lahaina Town Cleanup will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Kamehameha Iki Park. A welcome ceremony will start at 9 a.m.

PUUNENE – The nonprofit Community Work Day Program, now doing business as Malama Maui Nui, is coordinating the annual “Get the Drift and Bag it!” marine debris and shoreline cleanup events countywide during September and October.

The first event is the ninth annual Lahaina Town Cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Kamehameha Iki Park next to 505 Front Street in Lahaina. A welcome ceremony will start at 9 a.m.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., volunteers will clean the coastline from Puamana to Kaanapali. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, water bottles, litter grabbers, small nets for cigarette butts and trucks to haul rubbish.

LuLu’s, Pacific’O, Aloha Mixed Plate, Star Noodle and Tropic Water will provide food and beverages.

Ace Hardware and the Surfrider Foundation-Maui Chapter help run the event with both materials and people.

“Cumulatively, in the past nine years of this cleanup, over 1,000 participants have joined in to clean up some 40,000 pounds of rubbish,” noted Lahaina Town Cleanup organizer Matt Lane.

Hui O Wa’a Kaulua, Malama Maui Nui and the Surfrider Foundation will host a full day of activities from 9 a.m. to sunset, including the cleanup, water sports, canoe tours and more in honor of the birthday of the hui’s voyaging canoe, Mo’okiha O Pi’ilani.

A “Surf’s Up Picnic Potluck” is set for 3 to 6 p.m., followed by full moon paddle and canoe rides with Capt. Tim Gilliom and star navigation with Kala Baybayan from 6 to 9 p.m.

Movies and wa’a (canoe) documentaries will be featured throughout the day in the air-conditioned Polynesian Voyaging Theater.

Enjoy a full day of fun in the sun and under the stars with the Hui O Wa’a Kaulua crew.

All funds raised will go to support the launch of the Mo’okiha O Pi’ilani on Dec. 21.

Bring boards, canoes and paddles, as well as food and drinks to share. Canoe rides and rental boards will be available for tax-deductible donations.

“Get the Drift and Bag it!” is an opportunity for residents to join together in a global effort to remove litter and debris from the coastal environment.

The event will be coordinated in partnership with the Ocean Conservancy as part of its International Coastal Cleanup (ICC).

Under the banner of the ICC, hundreds of thousands of people turn out every year to do their part to turn the tide of trash that threatens the marine environment.

In the last 25 years, on just one day every September, almost nine million people have picked up some 144 million pounds of trash in more than 150 countries.

Each piece picked up is cataloged by type, providing valuable data for the cleanup and prevention of marine debris.

While the global effort takes place on a single day, data is accepted for cleanups that take place within 30 days of the September date, giving coordinators flexibility to schedule convenient dates for their groups.

Volunteers are welcome to participate as part of scheduled events, or pickup bags, gloves and other supplies to coordinate their own group at a location of their choice.

Divers are encouraged to participate in underwater cleanups.

All cleanup supplies and data cards will be provided for volunteers. Water will be supplied; volunteers are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles and work gloves.

To lessen the collective contribution to the waste stream, volunteers may also bring their own reusable bags or buckets for litter pickups.

Carpooling, walking and bicycling to the event are suggested.

Malama Maui Nui encourages Maui Nui businesses and residents to participate in “Get the Drift and Bag it!” on Sept. 21 or at any scheduled cleanup through Oct. 21.
